ROLE SYNOPSIS
The Product Development Engineer will use their experience with packaging and material handling to develop new chemical manufacturing processes to support robust growth in our Petroleum and Fuel Additives business segment. This engineer will take chemical manufacturing concepts from lab scale to pilot scale and demonstrate production feasibility. This engineer will work with lab chemists and pilot plant operators to produce test quantities of the new chemical products. The engineer will interact with vendors for evaluating and sourcing various equipment and making any modifications necessary to make them fit-for-purpose. This engineer will work with supply chain engineering team on commercial design of a successful pilot demonstration. The engineer will also act as project manager to coordinate and drive projects to completion.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Product development, design and R&D.
- Design and implement packaging, process control, and material handling systems and strategies.
- Determine the appropriate third party components appropriate for the application (pumps, valves, heat exchangers, instrumentation).
- Provide technical expertise regarding packaging materials, packaging systems, and packaging design in development and improvement of packaging materials, systems & equipment.
- Develop cost effective packages and delivery systems that improve performance, stability, and usability of our products, while supporting the environment.
- Will research and leverage material and design work to develop superior packaging for new and/or existing products
- Will lead or direct projects with minimal supervision.
- Plans and conducts assignments, generally involving large and complex projects or multiple projects.
- Has significant impact on product design, cost, performance, manufacturing methods/standardization and customer solutions.
- Technical presentations.
- May act as a liaison to other departments.
- Evaluates progress and results and recommends major changes in procedures.
- Operates with considerable latitude in making autonomous decisions related to technical pathways for projects.
- Sphere of influence includes engineering groups, support organizations, vendors, and joint ventures product development and commercialization.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor's Degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering with 8 + years of experience with Product Development of Packaging OR Master’s Degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering and 5+ years of experience with Product development of packaging OR PhD in Engineering with 3+ years of experience with product development of packaging.
- Experience developing, building, and testing packaging systems with heating and cooling of chemical materials under conveyance.
- Experience with packaging/bulk handling, transporting of materials – Wax Slabs, Granules and Pellets - such as conveying the materials within the plant
- Experience across different packaging materials / converting methods.
- Demonstrate creativity in the development of packaging systems.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor's Degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering with 10 + years of experience with product development OR Master’s Degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering and 8+ years of experience with product development OR PhD in Engineering with 6+ years of experience with product development.
- Experience developing, building, and designing reactors, polymerization, packaging/bulk handling, transporting of chemicals such as conveying the polymers and solids within the plant
- Demonstrated effective leadership skills
- Experience developing, building, and designing polymer reaction systems
