Our Client:
Our client is one of the world's leading producers of high-quality soda ash. Headquartered in New Jersey, their manufacturing operations are based in Green River, Wyoming. The Wyoming subsidiary produces soda ash, a raw ingredient in the manufacture of everything from glass to soap and detergent to textiles. The organization is a member of the American Natural Soda Ash Company (ANSAC), an export cooperative representing four of the five US soda ash producers.

Position Description:
This is an excellent opportunity for a business- savvy leader who wants to expand their skills with significant growth opportunity to for a career track to plant management or other senior plant positions. The Production / Operations Manager position will direct and coordinate all activities of production and Continuous Improvement (CIP) initiatives to ensure the production and shipment of products in a safe, and environmentally sound manner that maintains high standards for product quality and is cost effective, responsive to customer needs and production requirements. The position will lead and manage process engineers and overseeing the production processes. This management position will have P&L responsibility. The incumbent will need to be able to articulate and execute a vision in a constantly changing environment.

Key Responsibilities:
General Management
  • Serves as proactive member of management team by providing technical expertise, identifying cost saving opportunities;
  • Interacts with location and divisional cross-functional groups to optimize plant operations.
Production Management
  • Review production orders or schedules to ascertain product data such as types, quantities, and specifications of products and scheduled delivery dates in order to plan department operations;
  • Plan production operations, establishing manufacturing priorities and sequences;
  • Prepares operational schedules and coordinates manufacturing activities to ensure production and quality of products meets specifications;
  • Reviews production and operating reports and resolves operational, manufacturing, and maintenance problems to ensure minimum costs and prevent operational delay;
  • Inspects machines and equipment to ensure specific operational performance and optimum utilization;
  • Develops or revises standard operational and working practices and observes workers to ensure compliance with standards;
  • Provide operational resources to support investments in projects that improves quality and capability to meet internal and external customer needs and corporate, group, division and site goals;
  • Utilize data-driven, structured problem solving tools, such as Lean Mfg./Six Sigma/Kaizen/5 S, to improve process capability, eliminate waste and increase productivity efficiency
Planning/Budget/Forecasting
  • Participate in preparation of annual plant budget and periodic forecasts by preparation of budget estimates for production areas (raw material usages, production forecasts, capital expenditures etc.) which serve as the operating plan to achieve desired productivity and cost control objectives;
  • Pursue profitable growth through the achievement of cost reduction, budget compliance and expanding the scope of activities performed by the production team;
  • Monitor, communicate and forecast variances from financial performance targets;
  • Initiate improvement projects for cost reduction and process efficiency improvement;
  • Assist in AFE preparation when necessary to ensure cost effective production.
Quality Assurance
  • Participate in direction and management of quality process as a member of management team which develops quality objectives and reviews quality process annually;
  • Ensure production team identifies and prevents non-conformance to quality specification and encourage all employees to identify and prevent non-conformance to quality specifications;
  • Ensure that non-conformances are investigated and corrective actions developed, implemented and effective for the products in question;
  • Ensure document control within the production team;
  • Ensure that adequate traceability is documented and maintained for products under department control;
  • Approve updated process and instrument diagrams;
  • Communicate customer complaints to team members.
Environment, Health, Safety (EHS)
  • Participate per direction of EHS manager with environment, health, and safety programs and activities to provide for safe and productive working conditions in the facility;
  • Ensure all assigned employees understand and comply with all government, corporate, and plant required EHS rules, policies and standards operating procedures;
  • Participate in establishing training & drills to increase employee safety awareness;
  • Participate and support a waste minimization plan for facility such that equipment and procedures are safe and any significant changes are reviewed before implementation;
  • Direct plant employees in handling hazardous or universal waste
  • Lead the emergency response plan toward being a respected, fully responsible member of the community and to meet the goal of zero lost time and recordable accidents within the production team.
Administration
  • Ensure that personnel policies, procedures and guidelines are administered within the production team in a consistent and equitable manner;
  • Develop and direct employees in a proactive manner by fostering both individual employee contributions and development and cooperative teamwork, motivating toward total quality performance and exercising effective communication;
  • Conduct performance appraisals timely and coach and counsel direct reports to achieve optimal development opportunities;
  • Establish and communicate performance and behavioral standards and expectations;
  • Promote multi-skilling among the operator roles in order to create a flexible workforce and to foster the growth of capability within the production team.

Skill, Capability and Educational Requirements:
  • B.S. degree in engineering (preferred but not required), chemistry or related technical discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 5-7 years management experience in a mining, minerals, chemical manufacturing or processing facility.
  • 10 years' experience in industrial or chemical technical applications
  • Strong analytical, personal computer, organizational and leadership abilities;
  • Strong communication skills (written & verbal);
  • Strong problem-solving ability;
  • Expert knowledge of process technology and manufacturing preferred.
  • Strong experience in Continuous Improvement (Lean Mfg., Six Sigma, Toyota, etc.)
  • May handle hazardous or universal waste, or supervise someone who does.
