COMPANY
Our client is an independent oil and natural gas company engaged in the acquisition, development and exploration of oil and natural gas properties.
LOCATION
Midland, TX or Houston, TX
SPECIFIC DUTIES
• Must have mastery of prevailing statutory authority and it's applicability to financial data across broad functional areas
• Actively manage personnel, activities and deadlines in support of the financial reporting process, statutory reporting/compliance, and tax technical research, as applicable
• Applies concepts of income tax accounting standards (ASC 740) to meet financial reporting and disclosure requirements
• Interacts with and advises senior executives throughout the company on tax matters and works closely with external advisors in support of legal and accounting determinations made
• Acts as a company advocate and advisor in multiple substantive areas of tax law, both by subject matter and geography
• Liaises with finance and accounting, treasury, legal, and other internal customers to insure appropriate management of tax reporting and risk management for the company
• Provides tax leadership and support for acquisitions, dispositions, joint ventures, restructurings and other strategic transactions, including working with finance leadership to ensure appropriate post-acquisition integration.
• Organizes and maintains tax records and conducts tax studies and special projects
• Leads audit defense of tax positions taken, in addition to proposing and implementing planning opportunities to optimize the company's effective tax rate and/or cash tax position
• Ensures compliance with internal controls in their respective area
• Prepares/ reviews technical memoranda in support of tax positions taken in the financial statements and statutory filings
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; demonstrated ability to apply tax and accounting concepts to available data in order to accomplish tasks/goals
• Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in finance, accounting, or related discipline and 10+ years of demonstrated work experience and/or training in a corporate tax role
• Direct work experience in the oil/gas industry is required, preferably in exploration and production
• Must possess prior work experience developing and coaching a staff, including leading planning, decision-making, facilitating, and process improvement initiatives; taking responsibility for subordinates' activities; providing regular performance feedback; developing a tax staff's skills and encouraging growth; fostering quality focus in others; continually working to improve supervisory skills
• Must have extensive, demonstrated experience manipulating large amounts of data through the use of Microsoft Excel, including a working knowledge in the use of pivot tables and data tables; must be comfortable exporting data from other applications into Excel; experience with the use of Microsoft Access is helpful but not required
• A current Certified Public Accountant license is required
